Search for lost man called off

09 Mar, 2010 03:33 PM
POLICE have called off the ground search for a 76-year-old Sydney man missing in the Tahune region since Wednesday.

Acting Inspector Marcus Pearce said police had reviewed all aspects of the search - which involved more than 130 personnel in the past two days - before making the decision in consultation with a member of Jaoa de Ornelas's family.

"Based on expert medical opinion, police now consider that it is unlikely Mr de Ornelas would be alive if he has remained in the area," acting Inspector Pearce said yesterday.

"Tasmania Police would like to thank Forestry Tasmania, SES members and the volunteers who have provided significant assistance in the search."

Forestry Tasmania and police will continue to patrol the area in vehicles.
