 RSPCA slams 'discrimination'

RSPCA slams 'discrimination'

10 May, 2010 09:35 AM
THE RSPCA has labelled the State Government's new dangerous dog control laws discriminatory.

From July 1, pure-bred pit bulls will be classed as dangerous under new state legislation.

Once declared dangerous, a dog must be desexed and micro- chipped within 28 days at the owner's cost.

The Department of Premier and Cabinet claims the laws have been introduced to reduce the risk of dog attacks in the community.

But RSPCA state president Paul Swiatkowski said the animal was responsible for attacks on people and other animals, not the breed.

"Classifying dogs as dangerous should be done on an individual basis and not a breed basis," he said.

"If you look at the statistics, German shepherds and Rottweilers are actually involved in more attacks on people and other animals than pit bull terriers are.

"Pit bulls seem to be singled out mainly because of their potential to do damage ... if you are bitten by a pit bull, it can cause more damage than other breeds."

When the law comes into effect, pit bulls may no longer be bred in any Australian state.

The Northern Territory and ACT are the only places yet to classify the breed as dangerous.

From July, pit bull terriers must be muzzled in public while on a lead no longer than two metres, controlled by an adult. At home, the dog must be kept in an approved child-proof enclosure.

Councils would be able to detain pit bull terriers until a suitable enclosure has been built - with the dog held at the owner's cost.

If a suitable enclosure is not built, the dog could be destroyed.

It is understood that the above regulations, including desexing, would not apply to cross-bred pit bulls.

The stringent new laws also require all dogs in the state to be microchipped before July 1 next year.

very disappointing reporting! Pure bred pit bulls will be declared restricted breed dogs which is diffrent to a dog declared dangerous by council. Restricted breed dogs will not have to be housed in an enclosure when on private premises. This sort of reporting only causes confusion and panic. Well done Examiner!

Why not just outlaw Cross bred dogs this will stop a lot of trouble and I think it is a great thing that all dogs have to be micro-chipped

WHAT ABOUT CAT'S????? dont they kill? Maybe not people, but certainly alot of wildlife. But they dont even have to be registered or controlled. So come on people get FAIR!!!! Yes I agree about the Micro-chipping, so then at least the council's will have no excuse on knowing where the dog come's from. No more unreasonable terminations. By the way we have a pitbull and no he has never bitten anyone or anything he is 10 had since a puppy, would lick you to death before biting. Look at the owner's before blaming the dog. Unlike my cross breed, who(heeler x Fox terrier), very nasty little beasty. That's where the trouble lie's with alot of cross-bred dogs, not picking the mutt's I mean a chihauha's can be one of the nastiest little dog's you will ever meet, and I have witnessed the damage a jack russell can do to a child, so come on going a tad far aren't we????.

What about dangerous people? RSPCA kill 30,000 doga a year in Australia. This makes RSPCA more dangerous than a pit bull.

About bloody time. Hopefully the breed will die out in Australia soon. Pitts need to be started from SCRATCH, there are too many bad bloodlines out there and too many idiots who know nothing about breeding and inherited genetic traits producing puppies like they are going out of fashion. Once the breed has been wiped clean then allow only RESTRICTED ownership and breeding to try and get Pits back on track.

I don't see why we have to blame the one species out of the thousands. Obviously we're playing the blame the animals game because we just can't face the truth (it's our fault). Why aren't we concentrating on investing in preventing Ischaemic heart diseases, falls, suicide? Because those are the TRUE leading causes of death.

Seriously, I don't see why people think it's A-OK to be killing pitbulls just because they're roaming around with their owners just like any other dog. And seriously...letting them die out? How would HUMANS feel if some extraterrestrials came along and let us DIE OUT. The only reason you one track minded, self-absorbed, inconsiderate people find this dog (just like any other dog) a threat is because the media just LOVES to report them instead of any other species. I bet they've (pitbulls) have saved alot of lives as well, but no ones interested in that OF COURSE.

Like heck, why are we so afraid of pitbulls? They bite and maul at times, but humans stab, shoot, rape, beat up, torture, EAT, bomb, destroy....the list goes on, we kill more pitbulls than they've killed us. Why not ban us humans from planet earth instead?
