A WEATHERBOARD house overlooking the Tamar River at Rosevears was well alight last night when firefighters arrived and could not be saved.

Fire crews arrived at the blaze in Rosevears Drive about 11.25 pm. The house was almost totally destroyed.

It is understood that a smoke detector alerted the occupants to the fire.

No one was hurt and fire investigators are examining the scene. It is believed that the fire started at the back of the house.

Fire investigators are also looking into a fire at a house in Burge Place, Herdsmans Cove, in the State's south.

Police say the house was unoccupied at the time and the fire was confined to one room and was contained.

Fire crews arrived about 10.50 pm.
