Roller derby makes a `clean' start

05 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THERE were roller skates, pom-poms and soap suds aplenty at the Devil State Derby League car wash yesterday.

The new league of around 40 members held the car wash at the United Service Station in Newnham to raise funds for new merchandise and also to go to the Great Southern Slam tournament in Adelaide in June.

Around 20 derby girls, including Kylie Simons, of Launceston, were onsite to lend a hand.

Ms Simons said roller derby was a sport that involved teams of five on quad roller skates on a flat track.

``It's a sisterhood more than a sport,'' Ms Simons said.

With four blockers and one jammer per team, she said the aim was for the jammer to get through the other team's blockers.

``It's full contact using all of your body parts,'' she said.

The league raised $470 from the car wash and aims to have its first game next month.

It will hold a ``fresh meat'' 12-week beginners' course in April.
