TASMANIA Police are investigating an incident where a female mountain bike rider received injuries after hitting a wire that had been deliberately strung between two trees.
At 11am on Sunday the cyclist was riding her mountain bike in a reserve area at Conningham, in the State's south, when she was knocked off her bike after hitting the wire.
Police say the cyclist was extremely lucky not receive serious injuries, as it appears the wire had been placed around head height.
Commander Peter Edwards, of the Southern police district, said this type of incident has not been widely reported to police in the past and he was encouraging similar traps and incidents to be reported.
``Traps of this nature have the potential to end in the death of mountain bike riders and trail-bike riders and are of grave concern to police,'' Commander Edwards said.
``These types of incidents will be thoroughly investigated by police and there are a range of charges that offenders may be liable to, including crimes under the Criminal Code Act.''
