UPDATE: The RSPCA has announced that there have been four offers so far to give these wonderful little pets a home together. However, no decision will be made until Monday.
THEY are great mates that do not want to be separated.
Smithfield-cross Sweetie and brown burmese Ishmar Ling were recently reluctantly handed over to the RSPCA's Mowbray shelter.
The owner of the good- natured pets had moved into an aged care facility, leaving her cherished companions with nowhere else to go.
The pets are about the same age at over seven years old and have lived together all their lives.
For this reason, RSPCA Northern manager Lorraine Hamilton said the shelter was on the look out for a suitable owner who would adopt the unlikely couple.
"They are certainly comfortable in each other's company," she said.
"(The owner) did really love these animals, they were very much her life.
"It demonstrates what a big part pets can play in people's lives and what a comfort they are to people."
Ms Hamilton said it was difficult for anyone to have to hand over their pets to the shelter, especially for elderly people.
"For a lot of people when they get to that time of their lives and are living on their own, their one companion is a dog or a cat," she said.
