The Tasmania Fire Service confirmed one house has been lost and several structures destroyed with more under threat.

Unconfirmed reports from the area suggest that as many as four homes had been destroyed and another severely damaged in the fire.

A spokesman from the Swansea Holiday Park said the area had been buffeted by strong easterly winds this afternoon, reaching speeds of up to 130kmh.

The temperature reached 31 degrees on the east coast today.

Residents of houses in front of the fire have been evacuated.

The TFS warns that residents who are unprepared or whose properties are unprepared are advised to immediately go to a safer place, such as the beach, for their own safety.

Residents are strongly advised not to return to their properties until told to do so by the TFS.

Winds of up to 70kmh are expected to continue for another two to three hours before they abate in the early evening.

The public are urged to avoid entering the Dolphin Sands area.

The fire was first reported about 12.15pm today.

Four light tankers, three heavy tankers and a medium tanker at the scene and more resources have been mobilised.

TFS chief officer Mike Brown said strong winds and high temperatures caused several fires across the state to spread uncontrollably.
