Mayor's bid to give Tornadoes $25,000

10 Feb, 2012 03:31 PM
LAUNCESTON Mayor Albert van Zetten has asked fellow aldermen to vote in favour of giving the struggling Launceston Tornadoes $25,000.

The motion to sponsor the women's basketball club for $15,000 this year and $10,000 in 2013 will go before the Launceston City Council on Monday.

After 17 years the Tornadoes had been facing ``extinction'', according to new club chairman Mark Thurlow.

But in late 2011 a review led to a new board and all debts were paid except a $28,000 loan from the league.

Alderman van Zetten said the support was not about keeping the club afloat but because the Tornadoes provided an opportunity to local women to play a high calibre of basketball.

``This is to ensure that we can help them out for especially this year to get a base and then maybe next year'' he said.

``Obviously we don't want to do it long-term but just to help them in the interim to make sure they get re-established.''

The Tornadoes played 12 games on the mainland each season and these were opportunities to promote Launceston, he said.

It was important to keep Launceston in the club's title rather than have it replaced by the name of a corporate sponsor.

The motion ties any funding to the Tornadoes marketing Launceston as a tourist destination in all their activities. The team must also remain in the South-East Australian Basketball League and continue to provide opportunities to local basketballers.

Alderman van Zetten said he had not canvassed aldermen for support.

I think that the proposed payment should not be made and am surprised that it has been considered to the extent that it has.

There are far more important items, upon which money needs to be spent, than a "one off", or "two off", donation to any sporting body.

And why open "a can of worms", allowing other sporting bodies to ask for similar largesse?

Can we not see some restraint with Council spending on non-essential items?

Perhaps "Progress with Prudence" could be adopted as our city's fiscal motto?

At last. A proposal to support a sports club which is not a part of a multi million dollar enterprise.(football, motor racing, cricket horse racing)

Get behind them councilors, they aren't asking for millions like the others just a small handout to keep them going.

Good luck girls, let's hope the council looks kindly on the Mayor's proposal.

So now my rates will go towards this instead of essential services for the town??? Why does expensive sport seem to reign over the needs of ALL of the people of Launceston. We are stuck FOREVER with the cost of the stupid 'puddle on the hill' that will NEVER pay for itself and now this.

Politicians and councillors just love being philanthropic with money supplied by OTHER people!

Clearly they are setting the rates too high otherwise this would not be occurring.

Private groups should be responsible for their own costs as part of their business plan which does not include putting their hand in the public purse.

Suggest the club asks for a mentor to develop a business plan for Tornadoes.

Tornadoes should also be looking for sponsorship from businesses like Sports Authority, Foot Locker etc where they get their sports equipment.

Sponsors gets their business promoted by Tornadoes in some way such as badge on jumper size dependent on donation, signage etc etc.

Also have a fund raiser or two to invite community to support club.

Albert.....wouldn't this pay for ANOTHER report on Tamar River silt?

No may be not its only petty cash compared to the waste on such an item!

I am concerned that such an extravagant amount of money is being spent on sport at both local and state government levels when there are so many more services requiring a cash injection that do not get it.

Although i appreciate sport has an important role to play in our society, i agree with others that perhaps they need to be looking more in to corporate sponsorship and other fundraisers rather than relying on rate payers to cover the costs.

I guess it goes to show that if you know the right people in your networks you are able to get anything put up at a council meeting.

now we're on to something.

give the girls the money.

dredge the silt out and, dump it on the river banks, throw in a bit of cement and we have a levee. any extra savings, paint in a few bike lanes. who needs aldermen.
