Mainland couple's yacht rescue

06 Feb, 2012 07:54 AM
A Victorian man and woman have been airlifted from a yacht which ran aground on East Kangaroo Island south-west of Whitemark.

The 66-year-old man and woman were on board their 40 foot yacht when strong winds and heavy seas pushed their vessel on to rocks.

The couple activated their EPIRB to request assistance.

The Police Westpac Rescue Helicopter picked up the couple a short time ago and took them to the Whitemark Medical Centre suffering mild hypothermia.

According to police, the vessel was well equipped with all of the necessary safety equipment.

Rough weather in the area prevented the rescue from being performed by boat.
