HOMELESS teens in Launceston are being forced to trade sex for shelter, Laurel House manager Marg Dean says.
``So many couch surf so in order to have a roof over their heads, they have to pay for it,'' she said.
``These kids are being coerced. What choice do they have, especially in the middle of winter when they don't want to sleep out in the park anymore?
``If they don't know what services are available, they don't have any alternative but to be forced into sex so they have a place to sleep.
``We're talking about kids in their early adolescence here.''
Health and Human Services Department children deputy secretary Des Graham said anyone with concerns or information about possible sexual abuse or sexual exploitation of children or young people should contact the police who would then notify Child Protection Services.
``Tasmania has a strong child protection service, a reliable public housing system and a range of highly professional social support services which all exist to help those who need help,'' he said.
