THE Greens have called on Education Minister Lin Thorp to stop publishing the state's schools NAPLAN test results on the My School website.
Greens education spokesman Paul O'Halloran said that there were legitimate concerns that the focus on NAPLAN testing was leading to a "dumbing-down" of teaching and learning in Tasmanian schools.
Mr O'Halloran said that renowned mathematics education expert, Professor Kaye Stacey, had joined those in raising concerns that NAPLAN testing and the publishing of the results was creating a reliance on ROTE learning, to the detriment of problem solving, critical thinking and reasoning.
"The focus on NAPLAN testing and especially the publication of the NAPLAN test results is having a negative effect on teaching and learning,a nd I am calling on Minister Thorp to place the interests of the students first and to cease the publication of these results on the My School website," Mr O'Halloran said.
"Professor Kaye Stacey, the Australian Education Union, and Tasmanian Parents and Friends are now all opposed to the publication of these test results, and it is incumbent on the Minister to listen to those who are directly involved in the education of our children by once again placing the focus onto giving our children the best education possible.'
