The state ALP is expected to announce this afternoon that former state minister Lin Thorp, education union organiser Malcolm Upston, Athletics Tasmania president Brian Roe and long-term member Andrew Glasson will contest a ballot of rank and file members to fill the casual vacancy.
Nominations formally close at noon today, and ALP state secretary John Dowling confirmed that he would make an announcement soon after.
The ballot will be held over the next two weeks, with the successful candidate expected to begin work in the Senate next month.
It is the second casual vacancy to come up in Tasmania with Peter Whish-Wilson already selected to replace Tasmanian Greens Senator Bob Brown.
Both new senators will be based in the North or North-West of the state.
Mr Roe is also a sports columnist for The Examiner.
