English will play Pilate in the stage show, which will hit the stage in March 2012 at the Princess Theatre.
The production of Jesus Christ Superstar was the headline announcement at the theatre company's 2012 Theatrical Season launch in Launceston tonight.
The company also launched their current production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, which will run at the Princess Theatre from October 15 to 23.
“I’m feeling very excited and invigorated about revisiting Jesus Christ Superstar, and of course coming to Tassie is always a bonus," English said.
"I’ve done Superstar so many times now, albeit a long time ago, that I can do it in my sleep, probably in Swahili – every single role! But I’ve always fancied myself as a ‘Pilate’, a nice meaty dramatic part.
"Who knows I might even get them to ‘welease woger’.
“I’d also like to express my great appreciation to Encore for agreeing to donate the proceeds from the charity preview to the Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal, a cause for which I am an ambassador and which is very dear to my heart.”
Following on from Superstar, Encore will also present Cabaret at the Earl Arts Centre. Their 2012 season ends with Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, at the Earl Arts Centre.
