Dahlias delight at flower show

05 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
DAHLIAS thrived at the Launceston Horticultural Society Dahlia, Gladioli and Lilium show yesterday.

The show, held at Launceston's St Ailbe's Hall, saw around 30 exhibits with blooms in rainbow colours.

Show manager Pat Wellington said the standard of entrants this year didn't disappoint despite the hot and dry weather.

``Dahlias love the heat,'' Ms Wellington said.

She said the judge had commented on how the dahlias in this show were better than previous years.

Julie Powell, of Newstead, was caught admiring the dahlias.

``I just like the perfection in the way the petals grow,'' Ms Powell said.

She said she enjoyed going to the show to see what people could do.

``It's good to see that people are dedicated to making flowers as good as they can.''

The show continues today, from 9am to 4pm.

It includes a plant stall where people can get advice on how best to grow different plants.

WHAT: Launceston Horticultural Society's Dahlia, Gladioli and Lilium Show.

WHERE: St Ailbe's Hall, Launceston.

WHEN: Today, 9am to 4pm.
