REVHEADS be warned: the Launceston City Council will to try to increase its powers to deal with car bodies and other unsightly junk that may be piled up on a front lawn.
The council is able to deal with the nuisance through the Local Government Act via the Magistrates Court.
However, legal advice suggested this was often time-consuming and costly.
The courts also required proof and were bound by the rules of evidence.
``I suspect this deters most councils,'' council lawyer Shaun McElwaine said.
The council often received complaints about cars, car bodies and car parts on residential properties, particularly front yards.
``I've had a number of frustrated ratepayers out there and hopefully this will go some way to rectifying it,'' Alderman Rob Soward said.
Aldermen want the Local Government Association of Tasmania to push for the matter to be dealt with by the Resource Management and Planning Appeal Tribunal rather than the courts.
The motion will be considered at the LGAT general meeting on March 28.
