STAINED glass windows more than 140 years old are being restored as part of major conservation work at the Anglican Holy Trinity Church in Launceston.
Reverend Warwick Cuthbertson last night launched an appeal to raise $350,000 for works at the church and also the St Matthias Church in Windermere.
He said $66,590 had been raised so far.
Mr Cuthbertson said the Cameron Street church, built in 1902, required extensive works, including the restoration of the stained glass windows and also the stonework around the windows.
``Work has been done over the years but with older buildings there is a gradual deterioration and it requires major works every now and then,'' Mr Cuthbertson said.
``We're at the stage where we've had professional conservation management plans produced which provide a way forward.''
Mr Cuthbertson said the much older St Matthias Church, built about 1843, needed significant structural works.
The picturesque church located on the banks of the Tamar River, would also require some clearing works of the undergrowth near the water.
Mr Cuthbertson said the interior of both churches was reasonably good.
He said he was hoping that those in the community who may have enjoyed the buildings for an event, or had some connection to either of the churches over the years, would donate to the appeal.
