Chefs hunt for fresh produce at Harvest

12 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THREE trips back to the farm, 350 kilograms of freshly picked strawberries and six-foot stacks of empty cardboard boxes, and the Meander Valley Dairy Farm could safely call Harvest Launceston a success.

The farmer's market was held in Launceston for the first time yesterday.

People flocked through the gates at the Cimitiere Street car park to get their hands on some of Tasmania's best fresh produce, filling hessian bags with cheese, lamb, wine, rhubarb and fresh vegetables.

Harvest Launceston president Jenny Edis was overwhelmed at the response to the market with many stalls selling out early.

''It's been phenomenal,'' she said.

Meander Valley Dairy Farm was one of 25 stallholders at the market.

Managers Robin and Simon Dornauf said the market had surpassed their expectations.

''It's been crazy,'' Robin Dornauf said.

He said they had called on son Marcus to bring three uteloads of strawberries picked that day on the Hillwood farm.

They sold the lot.

Ms Edis was hoping to attract a florist, boutique beer producers and a seafood stall to fill the gaps at the market, which will be on again next week.

Great story!!

It is wonderful to see farming produce stories in the news, too many of our farms were taken over by trees, we could again become the food bowl we were meant to be.

We have a clean healthy environment for such produce let's keep it that way and feed generations to come.

How long has the produce sold in supermarkets been in transit - how long ago was it harvested. FRESH IS BEST.

When is the next market?

The market was excellent but spoiled by the presence of dogs so I won't be back until they are banned.

Excellent news! The sooner the duopoly of Coles & Woolworths lose their stranglehold on farmers, the better off we'll all be.
