IT TOOK almost 4 1/2 hours for four strangers to select Festivale's best stall awards.
But yesterday's final selections were what they said were the most visually attractive and tasty foods at the event.
Island Berry owner Andre Richardson said it was great to win the best dessert plate at the event.
``We have been making these desserts now for the best part of 15 years . . . so these events are really important to us and winning this is great,'' he said.
Best taste plate winner Tasmanian Gourmet Kitchen owner Bill Dowling said the key to winning an award was lots of hard work, good service and quality produce.
``We are very excited to win,'' he said. ``We work very hard to showcase Tasmanian producers.''
After taking out the best food award at last year's event, Landfall event manager Mimi Archer said it was fabulous that the business took out the award for the most environmentally friendly stall.
``It starts from where the product actually comes from, through to the equipment that you use and how you display things,'' she said.
``We won the best food stall award last year and did this this year and we've only been here for two years.''
Smithton Seafood Sensations owner Paul Viney said he was really happy his business won an award at its first event.
``It's great to be able to come here and showcase the good local, fresh produce,'' he said.
A last minute addition to the stall awards saw Hellyers Road Distillery named the best wine/beverage stall.
``It's fantastic, it's a great achievement for the team,'' distillery general manager Mark Littler said.
Festivale Plate Awards judge and Delicious magazine food director Valli Little said the awards were judged on the visual appearance of the product, how innovative they were and their taste.
``It was very much a mutual decision,'' Little said.
``We wanted a stallholder that wanted to talk to us and explain about what they do and where they source from.
``That was really the deciding factor.''
Little was joined on the judging panel by The Examiner's editor Martin Gilmour, Breath of Fresh Air film festival director Owen Tilbury and Junior MasterChef 2011 finalist Grace Nieuwhof.
