The Australian Council of Trade Unions will push for low-wage workers to be given a catch-up pay rise this year.
The minimum wage was stalled at $543.78 a week in 2009, marking the first pay freeze in 15 years. The former Australian Fair Pay Commission rejected in July the union movement's push for the nation's 1.3 million lowest-paid workers to be given a $21 a week rise. To compensate, ACTU secretary Jeff Lawrence wants a pay rise for those who work in the retail, hospitality, cleaning and hotel sectors.
