While one bridge was washed away, a new bridge Senator Brown had built soon after Christmas "took a battering" but withstood the force of the water.
He said 174 millimetres fell in the 14 hours to 4pm on Friday.
"It was the biggest flood in at least 40 years," he said.
"We've never had a flood in January before."
The engineer who built the bridge - for walkers accessing Deans Track to the top of Drys Bluff - was also present during the worst of the flood.
"He happened to come up for the night with his family, he watched it all unfolding, too," Senator Brown said.
