 Basin bacteria warning

Basin bacteria warning

04 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
PEOPLE are being advised not to swim in the First Basin at Launceston's Cataract Gorge after a routine water test returned high levels of bacteria.

The test was conducted by the Launceston City Council, with the result being released yesterday.

The council has advised that people should not touch the water until further notice.

This included swimming, boating and fishing.

Signs have been placed around the area to warn people of the poor water quality.

The pool is still open.

The council said tests had returned high levels of enterococcus bacteria.

The bacteria can cause a range of infections and symptoms can include localised redness, sinus infections, nausea, indigestion, fatigue, stomach pain and stomach inflammation, swelling and pain.

The council said it would advise the community when bacteria levels dropped to safe levels.

I guess that we can expect much worse when/if the pulpmill proceeds.

A greater water flow is needed to assist the present problem.

What comment from the Hydro?

How long before they commit to a greater guaranteed daily minimum flow? Not "average daily" but "actual daily".

Thats great they are warning swimmers not to swim due to the high bacteria, but what about the water we drink. Of late it has been disgusting. It is smelly and tastes bad, when was that tested last?. We have resorted to drinking bottle water....

More Bad News in Our Waterways??

I would venture to say that, if more water was flowing down through the Cataract Gorge at an acceptable and meaningful flow from (Trevallyn Dam) we might not have this problem????

Concerned rate payer,

"The council said tests had returned high levels of enterococcus bacteria."

Obviously it was tested recently, and your drinking water does not come out of the Basin unless you mistime your breathing.

It's a shame we don't live in a 'clever' country...

http://loqal.ph/business-and-finance/2010/11/12/filipino-inventor-turns-rice-hull-river-silt-into-fire-resistant-bricks/

Filipino inventor turns rice hull, river silt into fire-resistant bricks.

Many consider rice hull and river silt as waste by-products, but for Emmanuel “Manny” Alkuino, these raw materials can be made into something useful such as durable and fire-resistant bricks.

What a shame we don't have any silt or fibrous wood-like waste - and of course there is no market for fire resistant bricks in this country.

Get used to it !! Us Tasmanians have been Lab Rats for years.... God knows what they have been pumping into our once clean and beautiful waters. We are paying for it now, and it will only get worse..
