Approval awaited on post office proposal

07 Feb, 2012 07:00 AM
AUSTRALIA Post is still seeking final approval to fit out the heritage-listed Launceston post office building.

A spokeswoman for the postal service said plans with the Tasmanian Heritage Council were expected to be approved in the coming weeks.

The community-led drive to see Australia Post returned to its 1890 origins in Cameron Street has taken almost a decade.

Last year Australia Post announced that it would spend $500,000 restoring the building's main postal chamber.

The company's current post office in St John Street will be combined with a small outlet, already in the building, to create a larger post office with more services.

The spokeswoman said staff from the two existing offices would be redeployed either to Cameron Street or other outlets.

She said Australia Post and the Launceston City Council were still discussing the relocation of the council's visitor information centre to the building.

Everything old is new again. Great idea. Should never have moved in the first place.

You cannot get a parking spot within a bulls roar of the place.

Must be for tourists no one else is going to brave the parking meter revenue raisers.

It is like the library in the wrong place, which we no longer use for this very reason.

@ Tasmanian, maybe you should move to Longford. My wife and I did and we consider it to have been the best thing we ever did. We rarely travel into Launceston, as there really isn't the need to. We have a great, brand new supermarket, a library, a Tas. Service Centre that processes amongst other things, driver licence renewals, a post office and two major banks. And, NO PARKING METERS!
