Age proves no barrier to footy fever

08 Feb, 2012 07:21 AM
WHEN a bus load of Hawthorn footy players pulled up at the Sandhill Aged Care Facility yesterday, they received a hero's welcome.

With an old 45rpm record blaring out the Hawthorn anthem and more than 40 residents and staff clapping and singing along, it was unclear who was more chuffed by the visit.

Spokeswoman for the facility Sue Richardson said watching the smiles on the faces of the residents was simply priceless and an experience that would be treasured.

``We have quite a few avid Hawthorn fans at the residence and we had memorabilia all over the place,'' she said.

One of these dedicated fans is 95-year-old Gordon Hawthorn, who staff said could not wipe the smile off his face all day.

``Someone asked Mr Hawthorn how long he had been a supporter for and he replied, `Well I am 95, you figure it out', which had everyone laughing,'' Mrs Richardson said.

The Hawthorn team was visiting the residence to participate in the residents' daily exercise program.
