$8m just to 'fix' West Tamar Highway

10 Feb, 2012 10:02 AM
AN estimated $7-$8 million will need to be spent on mitigating damage to the West Tamar Highway, according to yesterday's Parliamentary Public Works joint house committee assessment.

Evidence from the committee was presented at Henty House following an inspection of the highway.

A wider shoulder as well as a barrier separating single lanes from double would also be included, according to committee deputy chairman Western Tiers MLC Greg Hall.

''The issue with that bit of road is that it lies on a landslip area - there will be several mitigation measures in what they're doing to make sure the road has a full life of 20 years or so,'' Mr Hall said. He said the committee, comprised of Huon MLC Paul Harris, Bass Greens MHA Kim Booth, Braddon Liberal MHA Adam Brooks and Labor Lyons MHA Rebecca White, would release a report within the next few weeks.

``Some discussions are still in committee at this stage but a report will be produced as to what will transpire from our findings.''

Hope that busy West Tamar highway has upgrade approved. Imagine how much it would cost to fix the Esk Main Road.It is currently in appalling condition.

Bring back the DMR, at least they knew how to build roads, Since the scrapping of them we have had no decent works..

$7 -$8 million...This is a very conservative estimate I think. The entire stretch of the West Tamar hwy from Legana to Exeter, for years has been a death trap and a legitimate concern for it's users. Most of the corners are extremely bumpy and have the wrong camber, pulling cars to the outside dangerously, especially in the wet. Intersections and driveways are near impossible to see, and in wet conditions the road holds water in dangerous patches like a dish. I am surprised that more people have not been killed on this road.

If only the West Tamar Highway were to have a proposed Pulp Mill at the end of it, then publicly funded upgrades would have been undertaken long ago.

Ten 60kmh speed signs for about $2000 should fix it!

This road is an enormous hazard for anyone who uses it. I regularly tow horses along this section of road and I have to slow to 40kph on the stretch of road near Grindelwald because the road is so uneven my horses fall down travelling any faster. This encourages other drivers to take risks to try and pass and is compounded when there are cyslists using the road too. We're all entitled to be there. Fix the road before someone gets killed or seriously injured.

Hey WTF ... WTF …the hazard is not the road but those (mis) using it. The road in itself would be safe as houses - idiot proofing it is impossible!

It is not ALWAYS the drivers on the West Tamar Hwy that are the problem as suggested by WTF. The surface of the road is substandard and only ever had patch up jobs to 'fix' it. If the road was surfaced to a good standard and not just 'to contract' as I have been told by the West Tamar Council, it would be much better. The contractors obviously have no pride in their work or the safety of drivers

While the government subcontracts on price we will always have substandard roads. Time to contract on standards and ask for a warranty on work done!

Roads can be made to last. Just make it a toll road!

Lower the speed limit and do not waste money on stupid lane barriers
