LAUNCESTON firefighters took nearly two hours to control a $1 million warehouse blaze at Prospect in the early hours of this morning.

Station Officer Heath Bracey said the Hudson's Plumbing Supplies warehouse in Donald Avenue was still burning at 9 am and the cause of the blaze was not yet known.

He said that the building was engulfed in flames and smoke when fire crews arrived at about 3am.

"Four fire trucks and an aerial platform battled the 10 metre high flames for an hour before bringing it under control.

"Neighbouring properties were threatened but sustained no considerable damage."

Mr Bracey said that due to the intensity of the fire the building could not be saved and early estimations of the loss was round $1 million.

He said a formal fire investigation will be carried out in conjunction with the police forensics unit and Aurora Energy.

Mr Bracey said the Launceston Fire Brigade also attended two other calls in the Prospect area at around 1.30 am this morning which resulted in damage to a motor vehicle and a ruibbish bin.
