Foxes are here, says parliamentary inquiry

24 Dec, 2009 02:35 PM
THEY are here. A small population of foxes exist in Tasmania, a parliamentary inquiry into the Tasmanian Government's $30 million Fox Eradication Program has concluded.

Joint Standing Committee of Public Accounts chairman Jim Wilkinson said there was ``strong evidence'' that the vermin had made its way to the state.

``As a result we need to do everything we can to make sure they are eradicated,'' Mr Wilkinson said.

``Twenty-four native species would be in real danger if foxes were to become established.''

A push for Commonwealth funding to help rid the state of foxes was among 14 recommendations made by the committee.

Mr Wilkinson said fox sceptics should be comforted by the recommendation that regular peer review of the work and activities undertaken by the Fox Eradication Program must continue.

Primary Industries Minister David Llewellyn welcomed the report.

"While the report is positive, a number of recommendations have been made and the State Government will consider them.

"In the meantime, the program will continue getting on with the task of eradicating foxes," Mr Llewellyn said.

So foxes are here ! This despite nine years of effort (?) and $30 million being spent. Still no carcass ! Perhaps it is past time to replace all of those involved with the unsuccessful Eradication Programme with new blood. So far the score is -fox small population, eradicators, nil.

What a farce...time to go Federal. Having read all the transcipts I am simply amazed. Another whitewash. Problem is not one ofyou politicians are going to stick your hand up...just in case a fox did turn up on your watch. After all it's only taxpayers money. What a farce.

Tasmanian politicians seem prepared to sell their souls to satisfy their insatiable thirst for Federal money. Ten years, 30 million dollars and not one fox. More funding ? Could I suggest you need to start with a brand new fox crew. Where else but Tasmania could you have such a taxpayer funded scam ?

Funny how there have been no fox sightings or photos by shooters, forestry, or our farmers. Instead a few friends of our government are pocketing millions of dollars of tax payers money and poisoning our state with 1080 poison on there so called 'evidence' So they found some fox turd, probably express posted from the mainland. We really need a non-government commission into corruption in our state, preferably the federal police or someone with the power to lock these con-men up along with there associates.

4 Carcasses, and nearly 50 Scats, so much for "no carcasses", and "express posted turds", these skeptical claims are more outrageous than evidence by a long way. Really, Just think about it. And the state government hates spending money on the environment, think about this, at least, for once, the politicians are listening to the evidence and professionals, and not to out-spoken deluded time wasters. And by the way, the eradication program is there to eradicate foxes, they are not the fox evidence publishing program. Ask anyone with experience of baiting foxes on the mainland and they will tell you that rarely, if ever, you'll find a baited fox, and there are >30 million of them there, and it does work. And if you have a problem with 1080, ring up foresters, as the blue carrots have a massive amount compared to fox baits, also, 1080 is actually native! that is why it is used, that is why it is biodegradable, and that is why native animals are tolerant of the low-1080 fox baits. So if the public is concerned about poisoning the state, stop using fertilisers, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, buy organic food, and look after Tasmania's biodiversity (eradicate feral cats, dogs & foxes).

Brian ... your four carcasses are - (1) a fox claimed to have been shot at Symmons Plains which is now known to have been shot in Victoria, as it was DNA matched as a sibling to fox skin that definitely came from Victoria. These two foxes were part of an elaborate hoax to claim a $5000 reward. (2) a "road killed" carcass that was actually killed on board a container ship and dumped outside the Burnie Port gates in October 2003. (3) the two month old remains of a fox cub first sighted on Christmas day 2005 but not reported until the Canberra cyclist returned to Canberra on the 23rd August 2006. This story has now changed however, it is now claimed the cub was shot by a "rabbit shooter" somewhere else and put at Lillico penguin rookery so it would be noticed. (4) the fourth fox carcass was the fox that "ran out from the side of the road" and was killed by an anonymous driver at 9.30 a.m. on the morning of the first of August 2006. Later that day (11.30 a.m.) forensic and pathology were conducted on this fox and it was proven to be at least 26 hours old. Fox scats are imported from the mainland...former employees of fox task force have admitted importing and planting them

Actually Brian Briste you are unfortunately very misinformed. The carrot baits you say are much stronger than fox baits is not fact and your statement could not be further from the truth, the carrot baits are mixes in a very watered down solution of Sodium monofluoroacetate (1080). The solution is only 0.14% for carrot, corn or apple baits. The 1080 Fox baits contain a single dose of three (3) m/g of 1080 per individual bait. Please make sure of your facts before you make misleading statements
