Ta Ann protesters are stupid: Green

26 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM

RESOURCES Minister Bryan Green has labelled protesters targeting timber company Ta Ann ``stupid''.

Members of the Huon Valley Environment Centre and Code Green yesterday mounted peaceful protests at two sites where they believe Forestry Tasmania is logging to supply Ta Ann.

Police attended the protest at Mawbanna, near Stanley, but made no arrests. One person will be summonsed for allegedly tampering with a vehicle.

``It's just so stupid by the conservationists to be protesting against Ta Ann when they are taking regrowth forest,'' Mr Green said yesterday.

``They're not taking old-growth forest and when we're right in the middle of a process where there's been an enormous amount of goodwill shown on all sides to try to resolve this debate, and they want to inflame it by closing down a legitimate operation in Tasmania.''

Late last year British firm International Plywood suspended buying from Ta Ann Tasmania, after being lobbied by conservationists.

Mr Green is yet to get a formal reply to his invitation to the company's management to visit Tasmania and reconsider the decision, but its receipt has been acknowledged.

Protesters are angry that the state and federal governments have allowed logging to continue within the 430,000 hectares meant to be placed in an interim reserve.

Mr Green's comments came a day after protesters disrupted the operation of Ta Ann's Huon mill for several hours. Both groups have vowed to continue action against Ta Ann until logging stops in the areas nominated for protection.

Code Green spokesman Jared Irwin said: ``It is business as usual in the forests, with old-growth and high conservation value forests tracts being lost despite being promised protection by the federal government last August.''

Whether or not tey are 'old growth', these two areas of forest are of high conservation value and have been recognised as having world heritage values. Both areas of forest mentioned are within the 430 000ha of forest that were signed off by the federal and state governments to be protected in August last year. Instead, as a result of Ta Ann's supply contracts, they are still being logged and clearfelled. This 'conservation agreement' does nothing to protect Tasmania's unique tracts of world heritage value forest.

Claiming these areas as World Heritage value, actually devalues the real Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage are that covers approximately 1.38 million hectares (or about 3.46 million acres) and represents about 1/5 of the area of our island state of Tasmania.

Tasmania struggles to attract tourists to the real WHA and its management is subsidised by the Taxpayer. Why can't the protesters do something useful and tree sit in the 90 m tall forests of the real WHA and support our tourism industry.

The protesters will never be happy until the Forest Industry completely shuts down. Tasmania is feeling the flow on effect of job losses in the Timber Industry now. If these protesters have got so much time on their hands & want to get a warm fuzzy feeling inside why don't they become a volunteer instead of destroying hard working people's lives.
