Protesters temporarily disrupt Ta Ann operations

25 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM

TA ANN temporarily stopped operations at its Huon Mill when a group of conservation activists entered the site yesterday.

The protesters, of Huon Valley Environment Centre, are promising that is just the start of their campaign against the timber processing company.

Up to 25 people, including children, entered the site at about midday.

``Ta Ann Tasmania personnel activated their invasion response plan, to safeguard workers as well as the illegal visitors and the police were called,'' senior resource manager Greg Hickey said.

``Ta Ann Tasmania's operational manager, in the company of the police, asked the activists to leave the site, and all did.''

Mr Hickey said that there was no interference with equipment, but up to an hour and a half of production was lost.

Sergeant Marcus Pearce, of Huonville police station, said that no arrests had been made as a result of the trespass.

Huon Valley Environment Centre spokeswoman Jenny Weber said that the two-hour peaceful protest finished when police ordered them to leave or face arrest.

She said that it was a demonstration against Ta Ann's native forest practices.

The group behind this invasion claims to be a charity and getting tax deductible donations, yet they endanger worker safety by their illegal actions. It time this sort of economic sabotage be condemned, and they should be made to pay the wages of workers for the lost time. As Ta Ann Tasmania is a manufacturer not a logger their claim about forest practices of the company is farcical!

The ENGO's have become a business like any other. HVEC and SWST as represented by Jenny Weber are pawns in the bigger game.

They need to have an enemy in order to remain relevant and will therefore become more radical and broaden their targeting as time goes on.

Arrest them, throw them in jail.

Maybe some workplace invasions at the Wilderness society would be a good idea?

The activities of local enviro groups are part and parcel of a healthy democracy, so is their right to raise funds from public support through donations. If Ta-ann is trying to hoodwink the public that their timber is sourced from sustainable forestry then we need whistleblowers like HVEC to correct the facts.

Its unfortunate that vested interests and their supporters seem to support the wind back of democracy as thier preferred response to the persistence of these public interest advocates continuing to express their voice. All power to the brave young activists. They speak for so many.
