No finance, but work to start on Gunns' pulp mill

20 Jul, 2009 05:47 PM
TASMANIAN timber company Gunns has given the biggest indication yet that it will build its controversial $2.2 billion pulp mill.

Despite not having a joint venture partner or finance, Gunns this morning confirmed that preparatory work will start next month on the Bell Bay site and the associated water pipeline route.

Gunns external relations manager Frances Duffy said people living near the proposed sites of work had been advised of the start-work.

``They should experience little impact at this early stage,'' Ms Duffy said.

Although, Gunns said that people living in the Trevallyn area might need to consider taking alternate walk paths for ``a week or so'' while work on the pipeline took place.

Ms Duffy said the consultation with neighbours had gone well with many people welcoming the news that work was starting.

``People are telling me they are tired of hearing about the pulp mill, they say either do it or don't, do but don't keep talking about it -- so we are just getting on with it,'' Ms Duffy said.

But, it is expected that West Tamar residents opposed to the project will be angry.

Led by anti-mill group TAP into a Better Tasmania, the residents have lobbied the West Tamar Council not to allow Gunns access to an easement on the council-owned land in Trevallyn and Riverside for the pipeline.

The council says its hands are tied, because it has legal advice that the State Government's approval of the Pulp Mill Assessment Act gives Gunns permission to access the land.

The council's land already has an easement on it for Hydro and was valued at about $7000.

Gunns' pipeline will run from Lake Trevallyn, under the Tamar River and will follow an existing pipeline route along the East Tamar Highway to the Bell Bay site.

Gunns will not provide an update on how many landholders it has come to agreement with on the East Tamar for the pipeline.

It has previously said that if all 20-odd landholders don't agree to an acquisition for the pipeline easement, the pulp mill would not be built.

When Gunns refused to have their project assessed by the RPDC, they claimed that they were losing $1 million per day. That claim, like so many others, has turned out to be totally false. Now they want to commit to the project without the funding. Doesn't this sound like a scam to keep governments on the hook and attract more subsidies?

That legal advice given to West Tamar Council by their lawyer Riverside resident Mr Shaun McElwaine, who is also Gunns' lawyer and Ralphs Bay Walker Corporations' lawyer, conflicts with advice from the State Solicitor General who says the council can choose whether to allow the pulp mill raw water supply pipeline across council land. The Hydro easement across council land carries statutory restrictions making it insufficient for Gunns pipeline to piggyback on.

It's irresponsible to commence construction of a pipeline without any legal rights, without finance and without the full Commonwealth approval is place. They may be trying to provoke an ugly standoff with Tamar Valley residents, whose jobs and businesses will be made worthless once the full impact of the mill is felt. People will be unable to live within 10kms of this disastrous undertaking. This is corporate desperation at it's worst.

I really think the instutional shareholders need to take a long hard look at the people running their investment in Gunns; as it would appear that the only thing they seem good at is wasting scarce cash on minor window dressing aspects of a mill that is yet to find serious funding. I am sure those contractors and workers being stood down at Gunns existing operations this month will be glad to know the company has its piorities in order.

Not surprisingly, only Gunns would attempt to construct a pulp mill out of nothing more than hot air and bull shit and it's no great wonder that it stinks already.

How irresponsible. No board members in their right mind would endorse their company's starting work on such a massively expensive project, that has neither the necessary federal environmental approvals in place, or - more importantly - certainty of finance! More insubstantial, groundless spin from Gunns PR people? I'd say so.

It's about time! What a wonderful project for this state - more will now want to invest and bring Tassie into the 21st century....finally! I love reading your comments - it makes the start of construction victory all the sweeter!

The sheer effrontery of this mongrel mob! Let's hope that they are made to "make good" their degredation when their mill is not approved. I wonder where are political aspirants stand in their respective views on "making good".

i think that tassie should look at what keeps the econemy going it isnt tourism or wine so move over and let one of the worlds cleanest mills to be built so we can get some profit from our timber rather than sell it as chips
