Mr Burke spoke to the media this afternoon, on a break from negotiations between Tasmania and the Commonwealth that began last night.
He said he had met with representatives of Triabunna Investments - the new owners of that chip mill - and made the Commonwealth position clear that the statement of principles had to form the basis of any deal agreed to by the Commonwealth.
Mr Burke also said he planning to stay another night in Hobart to continue to talks tomorrow.
"I'm hopeful of reaching an outcome as soon as we can (but) I would be surprised if we resolved this during the course of today,'' he said.
