ARMED with a sledgehammer and with warpaint smeared across his cheeks, Harry Galea has declared war on hard waste.
Mr Galea is the Launceston City Council's director for infrastructure, and in late February and March, the council will be offering a kerbside hard waste removal service for the Launceston municipality.
``The difference between this kerbside collection and others is that we are making a very genuine attempt to determine what is recyclable,'' Mr Galea said.
And this intent to make use of as much waste as possible is why people must register both their intent to participate and what rubbish they intend to leave out so the council can then co-ordinate the collection with rubbish and recycling trucks as well as Launceston-based charities.
``Essentially, we have this alliance with charity organisations so they at least can pick up the good stuff and sell or donate it to the needy,'' he said.
Mr Galea said the hard waste collection came in response to the community expressing the need for such a service.
``This is the first time in a long time that we have had this service, so provided that the place doesn't look unsightly and people are genuine about what they put out, then I don't see any reason why we wouldn't make it a regular occurrence,'' Mr Galea said
