Baby elephant's dramatic rescue

16 Mar, 2010 09:45 PM
Dramatic footage has been released of the scramble to save Taronga's now famous baby elephant after he gets into deep water in slip-up at the pool.

The newborn elephant, who has been affectionately nicknamed Mr Stumbles, made headlines last week when he was born despite vets at the Sydney zoo believing he had initially died.

The Channel Ten footage shows the baby elephant slip into the water while on show to the public.

After a few harrowing moments, the baby elephant was brought back to dry land thanks to the brave efforts of a handler and plenty of help from mum and other adult elephants, who rushed into the water to save the plucky calf.

Distressed onlookers cheered and applauded when the calf was eventually rescued.
