A quirky showcase of Australiana has come to Tasmania, with audiences singing along to the rich tapestry of our nation's aural heritage.
Cooee Cabaret is a show that weaves together iconic Australian songs and sound recordings, drawn from the National Registry of Recorded Sounds of Australia registry.
The perfoming trio of Nigel Ubrihien, Stephen Anderson and Guy Simon brought the show to Launceston's Earl Arts Centre last night, with Devonport and Burnie the next stop on The Road to Gundagai.
Cooee Cabaret journeys through the history of sound and song in Australia, from the earliest recordings of indigenous language in the late 1890s, through well-loved advertising jingles and radio broadcasts, to popular contemporary music.
Songs and sounds featured in the show include the Vegemite and Aeroplane Jelly jingles, Slim Dusty's Pub With No Beer, Dorothea Mackellar's classic ode to outback Australia, My Country, The Road to Gundagai and Waltzing Matilda, as well as pop classics from Kylie Minogue and The Skyhooks.
Also featured is the oldest surviving Australian sound recording, The Hen Convention, a 1897 novelty song featuring chicken impersonations.
``It's a funny, quirky show, and I think it helps people realise how diverse and interesting our sound is,'' producer Brendan Smith said.
``It says something that our the first ever Australian sound recording was of a guy pretending to be a chicken.''
Cooee Cabaret will play at the Devonport Entertainment and Convention Centre on Monday night and the Burnie Arts and Function Centre on Wednesday.
The show is free, but bookings are recommended through the venues.
