Top students apply the right formula

Top students apply the right formula

17 Dec, 2009 03:29 PM
THE results are in - and thousands of Tasmanian students can breathe sighs of relief or disappointment.

More than 2500 students got their TCE results yesterday, with Launceston students making up 20 of the top 96 results in the state.

Two of the top students revealed the excitement they felt at getting their scores and being able to plan for the future.

Scotch Oakburn College's Emma Davey got an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank of 99.9 and said it was "pretty crazy" when she checked her email and saw the results.

Miss Davey plans to do medicine and originally thought her score was 90 when she read one of the emails - which might not have been enough to get her into the course she's looking at.

However, it all worked out in her favour and now she's choosing her course for 2012, after she completes a gap year.

Newstead College student Jennifer Ralph also scored high, getting 99.7 and placing in the top 100 students in the state.

She is also planning to do medicine, having studied physics, chemistry, biology and specialised maths this year.

Miss Ralph said she received her love of maths and physics from her late father, and she was glad to have done well in those subjects.

Both students said hard work was a key to getting good results, but each had their own individual ideas for success.

Miss Davey said understanding a topic rather than just learning it was important, while Miss Ralph said a healthy sense of competition and wanting to get the best result helped her along.

Premier and Education Minister David Bartlett congratulated all students on their results.

He said 2514 students had been awarded the Tasmanian Certificate of Education for learning they completed during 2009, while 2142 students received an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank.

"ATAR is the nationally agreed name used this year for what was known in Tasmania as a Tertiary Entrance Rank," Mr Bartlett said.
