Tasmanian students not making year 11 priority

31 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
MORE Tasmanian students are continuing to year 12, but the proportion of students staying at school until year 11 remains the lowest in the nation, new figures released today reveal.

The Productivity Commission's report on government services showed 72.9 per cent of students enrolled in year 12 in 2010, a 10 per cent increase on the previous year.

New South Wales had the lowest proportion of students enrolled in year 12.

While other states experienced the biggest drop off between years 11 and 12, Tasmania experienced a sharp drop between years 10 and 11, leaving only 74.8 per cent enrolled in year 11, far below the national average of 91.5 per cent.

The state and federal governments spent a total of $14,251 on each government school student in 2009-10, up from $13,272 the year before.
