FIONA McMullen is set to experience a 30-degree temperature difference as she sets off on Tuesday for Krakow, Poland.
The University of Tasmania third-year bachelor of environmental design student will spend almost four months on exchange at the Krakow Institute of Technology, a partnership university.
Leaving behind her home town Penguin, which has been enjoying summer temperatures in the mid to high 20s, Ms McMullen is bracing herself for snow and minus 10 days.
Ms McMullen said she was excited to be undertaking the exchange and spending time in Poland, an eastern European country she had not yet visited.
``The School of Architecture and Design has a partnership with the Krakow Institute of Technology so the courses I do over there will give me credit here,'' Ms McMullen said.
``So I'm not missing out on anything and when I'm back I'm just straight back into it.''
The courses she will do include units on history, design and technology, and she will also undertake both a Poland and European study tour.
The town planning course at the institute is highly regarded and is accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
``Krakow was one of the cities virtually unscathed after World War II, so there are a lot of historical buildings I'll be able to see,'' Ms McMullen.
``There are places you hear and read about but I'll actually see the real thing.''
As well as her acceptance into the exchange program, Ms McMullen also gained a scholarship from Corporate Express to cover her airfares.
Ms McMullen will be joined by two other students from the university on the exchange.
