Gunns close to finalising Great Southern acquisition

04 Jan, 2010 05:44 PM
LAUNCESTON timber company Gunns Limited has all but completed its acquisition of nine Great Southern managed investment schemes.

Gunns advised the Australian Securities Exchange today that growers in the 2006 Great Southern scheme had voted to accept their offer.

Growers in eight older schemes voted on December 23 to accept the Gunns bid and this was approved by the Victorian Supreme Court on December 31.

"At the meeting for the 2006 scheme (which was adjourned on December 23 and held today), growers voted to accept Gunns' proposal for Gunns Plantations Ltd to become the responsible entity and to effect a restructure of the 2006 scheme," the company said.

"Some 54.53 per cent of growers (approximately 95 per cent of all votes cast) voted in favour of the extraordinary resolution."

Gunns says an application in the Victorian Supreme Court for orders in relation to the 2006 scheme is expected to be heard tomorrow.

Great Southern, which went into administration in May, had about 42,000 hectares of investment plantation in the Green Triangle region of south-west Victoria and south-east South Australia.

Gunns has earlier said that the cost of managing the plantations, expected to cost $100 million over 11 years, would be funded from internally-generated cash flows.

The company would receive between 4.5 per cent and 55 per cent of net harvest proceeds as responsible entity.

It said it expected to harvest more than 500,000 green metric tonnes of pulpwood from the schemes this year. By 2017 it expects the schemes to generate 2.8 million green metric tonnes of pulpwood.
