Northern District Officer Steve Lowe says the Tasmania Fire Service is in a better position to fight deadly bushfires than it was 40 years ago, when the Black Tuesday blaze killed 60 people in Hobart.

District Officer Steve Lowe said that once fires reached a certain size in favourable conditions, they were virtually unstoppable - even with today's equipment - so it was crucial to restrict fire usage.
