Boy drowns at Latrobe's Bells Parade

16 Nov, 2009 06:12 PM
THE body of a 15-year-old Latrobe High School student has been recovered from the Mersey River at Latrobe this afternoon.

Tasmania Police were called to Bells Parade, in Latrobe, just before 3pm. It is understood that the boy had gone to the river for an organised school trip and had been swimming.

"He had been in the area prior to a planned school organised activity that was scheduled for the afternoon," a police spokesman said.

"He was found to be missing during the afternoon. The boy’s body was located, and emergency services and Police search and rescue attended about 3pm."

The Examiner's Ben Wild reports that it was understood the boy's body was located by a person in a kayak.

Five police vehicles and two ambulances were at the scene and distressed family members arrived at the river about 4 pm.

The boy's family have been told of the tragedy but police have not released his name. They are not treating the death as suspicious.

Police ask anyone who saw teenagers in the Bells Parade area around lunchtime to contact Devonport Police on 6421 7501 or the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner.

The Secretary of the Department of Education, John Smyth, expressed his deep sympathy to the family and friends of the student.

“This is a very tragic day for the parents and for the Latrobe High School community and my heart goes out to them all,” Mr Smyth said.

“Students and staff of Latrobe High School are trying to come to terms with the tragic loss of a young student of their school.

“Our immediate priority is to focus on the support for those involved in this tragedy, including the students and staff.

“Our other priority is to co-operate fully with Tasmania Police during the police investigation.

“Because the police investigation is underway, we are not in a position to make any further comment,” Mr Smyth said.

Hope this boy's family don't hear about his drowning from The Examiner.

I wonder when schools are going to put an end to these trips/ camps that involve water activities if it is not the annual swimming carnival. If teachers and schools are often heard to say that their classes are too big to deal with and so on and it makes it difficult to educate our children properly, one wonders why they should think that they are able to supervise these children to a suitable standard around water. This has happened in my opinion too many times in Tasmanian schools.
