AUSTRALIAN Greens leader Bob Brown will be able to pay his $240,000 legal bill on time thanks to more than 1000 donations from the public.
Senator Brown faced the prospect of losing his seat if he was unable to raise the amount by the end of the month.
In December 2006, the Federal Court found in favour of Senator Brown's claim that Forestry Tasmania's logging in the Wielangta Forest on the East Coast threatened endangered species.
However, that decision was overturned and Senator Brown was ordered to pay the court costs for Forestry Tasmania.
In the past two days, Senator Brown secured the support of entrepreneur Dick Smith, Northern Tasmanian gardening identity Peter Cundall, and Victorian Electrical Trades Union secretary Dean Mighell.
But Senator Brown said yesterday he would not need Mr Smith's support due to an overwhelming response from the public.
More than 1000 people have donated money in amounts ranging from $7.20 to $20,000.
And Senator Brown said not all donations were from Green supporters.
"It shows how strongly people feel about the fate of Tasmania's wild forests and their wildlife," he said. All donations above $300 will be declared publicly on the Senate's gifts register.
