GREENS leader Bob Brown has called for tighter gun controls after three Tasmanians were busted in the US for shooting and killing elk out of season.
Senator Brown has blamed hunting for rising gun sales.
``This culture of killing wild beasts is being promoted and we know that gun sales in Australia are going up, it's high time we had a review of that,'' he
said.
``There is a right place for weapons in any society but armed Australians shooting down helpless wonderful wild creatures elsewhere in the world is not
one of them.
``As a Tasmanian I'm ashamed and appalled.''
Australia's peak deer hunting body expressed shock and disappointment at the Blackwood Creek men who were given partially suspended jail terms for
illegally hunting and killing elk and a wolf in the Rocky Mountains.
Australian Deer Association national president Bob Gough said Samuel Henley, 18, Darren Tubb, 43, and Anton Kapeller, 58, had tarnished the reputation
of Australians heading overseas to hunt.
