Questions for driver

09 Feb, 2012 07:09 AM
POLICE have questioned a Rocherlea man they allege was driving a car that crashed on the East Tamar Highway at Newnham on Monday morning, killing one of the passengers.

The driver and front-seat passenger fled the scene, leaving behind the dying man and another seriously injured passenger.

Waverley man Troy Dolbey, 30, died of his injuries in the Launceston General Hospital on Monday night.

The other man, a 29-year-old from Ravenswood, is in a satisfactory condition.

Inspector Darren Hopkins said the man was questioned about the crash at the Launceston Police Station yesterday.

He was arrested at 7am after a search of his Lilydale Road home and charged with several unrelated matters.

Inspector Hopkins said police intended to charge the man in relation to the fatal crash.

``We are satisfied that he was the offending driver,'' he said.

The man appeared in the Launceston Magistrates Court on other charges yesterday and was bailed to appear next month.

Inspector Hopkins said a 27-year-old Rocherlea man admitted to police on Tuesday that he had been a passenger in the car at the time of the crash, and had fled the scene. He has been released without charge.
