A 17-YEAR-OLD girl with three teenage passengers was caught driving 63kmh over the 80kmh provisional speed limit in the state's North-West yesterday.
Police intercepted the driver on the Murchinson Highway near the Hatfield River, between Waratah and the Cradle Mountain Junction.
Police said she was travelling at 143kmh in a 100kmh zone and had only had her licence for three months.
Police were alarmed at the her driving and said that the high speed combined with a lack of practical driving experience put the girl and her teenage passengers at serious risk of injury or death.
"The 80kmh speed limit is imposed on first-year provisional drivers to enable them to learn to operate a vehicle safely," a police spokesman said.
"Also to ensure they gain practical driving experience before being able to travel at posted speed limits.
"Travelling at high speed places experienced drivers at substantial risk of being involved in a collision and the risk compounds immensely when inexperience is added to the mix."
Police seized the teenager's vehicle under provisions of the vehicle clamping and confiscation guidelines and the driver will face charges related to the manner of driving.
Police would like to speak to any witness that may have seen a white Nissan hatchback travelling on the Ridgley Highway or Murchison Highway between 4.30pm and 5pm on Saturday, March 13.
Anyone who may have witnessed this vehicle is asked to contact Constable Adam Lloyd at Western District accident investigation on 131444.
