Police arrest alleged Perth burglar

30 Jul, 2010 08:36 AM
A 21-YEAR-OLD Ravenswood man has been charged over a string of home burglaries including one of the biggest private jewellery thefts in Tasmanian history.

A Perth home was targeted in daylight hours on July 15 in what police believe to have been a planned theft involving more than one person.

Tens of thousands of dollars of new electrical equipment was stolen - as well as nearly $200,000 worth of jewellery.

The jewellery was housed in a safe the thieves removed from the home.

Launceston criminal investigation branch boss Scott Flude has now confirmed police have made what they believed will be the first of several arrests in relation to the crime.

Police believe the same group of offenders was responsible for a string of recent home break-ins in Launceston and surrounding suburbs.

Many of the victims reportedly returned home to find their homes had been completely ransacked as well as robbed.

"Police arrested alleged offender Jake Hattenschwiler at a Newnham property (on Wednesday) afternoon," Inspector Flude said yesterday.

Police will allege forensic exhibits taken from the Perth home placed Mr Hattenschwiler at the crime scene.

He has since been charged with multiple burglaries and was yesterday remanded in custody after appearing before the Launceston Magistrates Court.

He will reappear in court for plea on August 17.

Inspector Flude said uniformed police and detectives were working together to identify others involved in the crimes committed between June 1 and July 28.

"Obviously home burglaries are of significant concern, and we've been employing significant resources to catching those responsible," he said.

"Police are currently following a number of lines of inquiry and we expect to make further arrests in the near future."

None of the stolen property has been recovered.

Anyone with any information about these crimes is urged to contact Launceston CIB on 63363701, or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.

Callers can remain anonymous and may become eligible for a reward.
