Parents of murdered student to fly out from China

01 Jul, 2009 05:25 PM
THE parents of an international student allegedly murdered in Hobart will make the trip from China to collect their daughter's body, police say.

Two 21-year-old men were yesterday charged with the murder of Zhang "Tina" Yu, 26, and were remanded in custody.

Two co-accused have been charged with failing to report that a person had been killed.

Police have yet to say how Ms Yu died.

Detectives say they were led early yesterday to a remote stretch of the Tyenna River, near the Mount Field National Park about 60 kilometres west of Hobart, where the body of Ms Yu was found snagged under a tree, partly submerged.

She had arrived in Tasmania from China last year and was studying accountancy at the University of Tasmania.

Police had been searching for her since friends reported her missing on Thursday, after she had spent a night out in Hobart.

Police allege that a random meeting with two men introduced to her by an acquaintance working in a late-night pizza shop led to Ms Yu's murder in a Hobart unit.

Police said Ms Yu accepted an offer of a lift to the CBD about 1.30am on Thursday.

They allege she was murdered inside a Hobart unit about 5am on Thursday and her body was dumped soon after.

Stavros Papadopoulos and Daniel Joseph Williams, both of Hobart, have been charged with murdering Ms Yu.

Mr Papadopoulos had a black eye when he faced the Hobart Magistrates Court.

He and Mr Williams were remanded in custody to reappear in the same court on July 24.

They were not required to enter a plea and did not apply for bail.

Jazmin Iris Haygarth, 18, who lives with Mr Papadopoulos, and John Edward Mollineaux, 43, who lives near the couple, were bailed to reappear on July 24.

They were not required to enter a plea.

Outside the court Hobart Senior Inspector Peter Powell said Ms Yu's family would come from China to collect her body after examinations were complete.

Police said investigations were continuing.

Once again someone takes the life of an innocent person, leaving broken hearts and lives.Tina was most likely an only child and now she is gone. And what will happen to them? Nothing, compared to what they have done! It makes me feel sick knowing these oxygen thieves are out there and they will get to walk free at some stage. Their victim dead, and her families lives changed forever.

Chinese students from Ocean University, Qingdao, Shandong Province are making a significant presence in UTAS, Hobart. I hope that the university will provide counselling, and a proper memorial service, so that Yu Zhang's friends can grieve for her.

This is awful and really bad to Tasmania's reputation. I expect Government is competent to realise the seriousness of this tragedy, really does things to protect international students and give them an even safer environment to study.
