Men charged over Newnham burglary, assault

07 Feb, 2012 07:02 AM
TWO men who allegedly smashed their way into a Newnham home on Friday night and bashed one of the occupants have been charged with aggravated burglary, stealing and assault.

Inspector Darren Hopkins, of Launceston police, alleged the 25-year-old Kings Meadows man and 21-year-old Newnham man forced their way into the Wallace Street house about 11.45pm and assaulted a man.

``Police received a number of calls from members of the public who reported hearing gunshots,'' Inspector Hopkins said.

He said police had not located any firearms, cartridges or evidence of bullet damage but the forensic investigation was continuing.

Inspector Hopkins alleged the men smashed windows in the house and damaged property inside.

Three other people were in the house when the alleged incident occurred.

The man allegedly assaulted is not believed to be seriously injured.
