Jail term for pizza delivery robbery

17 Mar, 2010 02:44 PM
A 19-year-old man who bashed a pizza delivery driver over the head with a plastic cricket bat has been sentenced to nine months' jail.

Corey William Clayden appeared before Justice Helen Wood in the Hobart Supreme Court yesterday for sentencing after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated armed robbery.

In her sentencing report, Justice Wood said that on November 26 last year, Clayden had ordered pizza and other items for delivery.

``When the driver ... delivered the order and walked towards the front door, you struck him from behind with a plastic cricket bat,'' Justice Wood said.

The driver suffered a concussion from the attack and spent a night in hospital.

Justice Wood said the driver had suffered some psychological effects from the incident and was no longer able to work delivering pizzas.

Justice Wood convicted Clayden of aggravated armed robbery and sentenced him to nine months' jail, backdated to December 1, 2009, with the balance suspended immediately on the condition he be of good behaviour for 18 months.

He was also placed under the supervision of a probation officer for 18 months and ordered to compensate the proprietor of Domino's Pizza in Burnie $38.95.
