FORMER Gunns Ltd chairman John Eugene Gay has narrowly avoided losing his licence after pleading guilty to failing to wear a seatbelt.
Police saw the 68-year-old East Launceston man driving away from the Westbury Council Chambers while still buckling up on February 23 last year.
The offence normally incurs three demerit points and the loss of just one would have cost Mr Gay his licence.
However, he left the Launceston Magistrates Court with just a $300 fine yesterday.
His lawyer, Bill Griffiths, said the seatbelt was ``faulty'' and had stuck, but that he had only travelled a few metres at low speed along the road before putting the seatbelt on properly.
