 Smoking decision has AHA fuming

Smoking decision has AHA fuming

17 Feb, 2010 06:28 AM
THE Australian Hotels Association has reacted with fury to a ban on smoking in Launceston's outdoor dining areas, due to come into effect next year.

On Monday, the Launceston City Council voted to introduce the ban next January, despite opposition from both the Launceston Chamber of Commerce and Cityprom.

The council heard officers had sent out 50 surveys on the proposed ban to outdoor dining operators, but had only received one completed form back.

AHA chief executive Steve Old said he was flabbergasted by the council's decision, and that his organisation would be lobbying aldermen to overturn it as soon as possible.

Mr Old said instituting the ban would result in "a war" between restaurant operators and the council.

"We are absolutely fuming," Mr Old said.

"I would have thought if the council planned to make such a major decision that was going to have such an impact on the hospitality industry, they would have come and chatted to the association involved.

"They did not have the decency to do that.

"They claim they've sent out 50 surveys to businesses - but I can tell you out of the biggest hospitality venues (in Launceston), none received a survey."

Mr Old said the ban would have "a massive impact" on cafe, restaurant and hotel operators who had already complied with smoking bans indoors.

"Smoking is not outlawed - it is a legitimate, legal thing to do," Mr Old said.

"If someone wants to outlaw smoking completely, then go for it, but why is the council targeting restaurants, pubs and hospitality venues when they have already had bans on smoking inside?

"Restaurants and pubs are the biggest ratepayers in municipal areas and if the council wants to start a war with them they are going down a dangerous path."

Hold on a minute! How can the Mayor claim 80% of respondents support the ban if only ONE survey of a pultry 50 was returned???? Petty and pointless I said yesterday - now I add fraudulent. Seems there is a smoking gun awaiting to go off - hold on, smoking guns were also banned. Crikey! C'mon Mr Mayor, cut through the smoke and get this decision back on the table. After all, exhaust fumes will need to be banned next; following by flatulent people (yep, no f**ts in the CBD from 1/7/2012); then Spring scents; not forgetting smoke from kitchens; then the sewage treatment works! Is this REALLY an important issue for councillors to meet and discuss? Haven't you all got better matters to deal with? Petty, pathetic, pointless, fraudulent, unfair to traders. And I don't smoke, but I do believe in democratic choice - clearly Council doesn't.

Smoking kills as does passive smoking. What else do these dinosaurs need to know? In addition it is a huge imposition on non-smokers to suffer the fumes. Cars are legal also but they cannot be driven anywhere at any speed. Yes we have a democratic choice - at the polling booth.

I wish they would ban smoking in the CBD all together.. It is terrible having to deal with people's second hand smoke everywhere you go! they more or less blow it in your face half the time! I love paying good money to eat my food just to have it ruined by the smell of cigarette smoke!! Not smoking in pubs and clubs made alot of people quit so this idea is only following an already prooven method to help curb smoking behaviour. Local government cant convince the federal government to 'Ban smoking' but they can impose local laws to 'restrict' where people cant smoke.

A dinosaur is it briano? Alcohol is legal & also kills; also prescription drugs; vehicle exhaust is carcinogenic and harmful to the environment - what else do YOU need to know briano? Descending to a personal jibe does nothing for non-smokers & smokers alike. Cigarettes, vehicles, alcohol and prescription drugs are legal - and all can kill. Yes Tezwah, passive smoking IS no good for anyone - and I don't like it either. BUT, the BIGGEST laugh rests on those who choose to eat their food with exhaust, bugs, fumes, breezes and so on. Banning smoking wont change or help the environment we ALL live in, just those who wish to eat on the footpaths. Indeed, I find breathing in the fumes from people who have bathed themselves in deoderant or perfume to be overpowering (if not laughable) at times - and it irritates my nose much like smoking, but I don't suspect Council will ban that. Alcohol kills more innocent people than smoking, usually on the roads. I have had to retrieve the injured & dead from vehicles who ended up that way because of an alcohol indulged person until it finally got to me. Smokers kill themselves; drink-drivers kill the innocent. One doesn't need many brain cells here!
