THE Tasmanian Government says improving broadband internet competition remains its highest priority, despite continued uncertainty surrounding the future of the Basslink fibre optic cable.
The Government's handling of the issue has come under fire from Tasmanian Liberal Senator Guy Barnett.
Senator Barnett said the cable had been laying dormant since 2004, with the State Government unable to come to an agreement with Basslink's owners.
He's branded the Government's handling of the issue as a disgrace.
Yesterday, Treasurer Michael Aird said negotiations between the Government, Aurora and CitySpring - the cable's owner - were continuing. But Mr Aird wouldn't be drawn on how long it would take to finalise the agreement.
``Improving broadband competition in Tasmania is the highest priority for the Government,'' the Treasurer said.
``Commercial negotiations between CitySpring, Aurora and the Government regarding the future development of the optic fibre network in Tasmania are continuing.
``I am hopeful we are getting closer to a resolution.''
